“Willkommen” to our Winter 2022-2023 Newsletter!
Dear AYF and JYF Alumni!
As we head into the winter break here in Freiburg, we are pleased to send you our first AYF Alumni Newsletters for the Academic Year 2022-23 along with our warmest wishes for the Holiday Season!
For year two in our “new normal” Covid world, we are happy to have 27 students join us in Freiburg, along with our Academic Director Marc Kleijwegt (UW-Madison, Roman History).
For the first time, this year’s group includes two students from Vanderbilt University and a student from the College of William & Mary. In addition, the cohort includes students pursuing bachelor’s degrees at Michigan State University (9), University of Iowa (7), University of Michigan (4) and the University of Wisconsin-Madison (3), and Indiana University (1).
We have been able to resume many of our customary activities such as the outings to Basel and the Alsace during the orientation period, which has been a delight.
Our fall and winter of 2022 have been lovely with new classes and teachers, with experiences in the region and beyond, with the Weihnachtsmarkt in recent weeks and meetings with friends of the program and alumni stopping by. Even the Black Forest Badgers have been able to start rehearsing this fall! Our students’ excitement and positive attitude have often made our day, and we are looking forward to more explorations together in the new year.
In this newsletter you will find:
- An Invitation to our AYF Reunion 2023 and Anniversary Celebration (July 6-10, 2023)
- Tracy’s Reunion Roundup of our 2022 Gathering
- Highlights from our American and German Alumni Clubs
- A student’s impressions from 400 Years of History on Schauinsland
- Student report about „Native Speakers Day” in Herbolzheim
You can help us by spreading the word and liberally forwarding this newsletter to other JYF and AYF alumni and cross-posting it to your JY / AYF year’s Facebook groups. Also, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us – we’d love to hear from you! And please stop by and visit when your travels bring you back to Freiburg – perhaps as soon as this coming July at our AYF @ 60+3 Reunion and Anniversary Celebration!
As the year comes to a close, we wish you health and happiness for 2023!
With warmest wishes from Freiburg,
Marc Kleijwegt, Academic Director 2022-23
Ulrich (Ulli) Struve, Program Director
