We’re so glad you’ve made the decision to apply for the Academic Year in Freiburg study abroad program! We know you’ll enjoy this once in a lifetime opportunity to live in Freiburg and study at a German university. Below you’ll find more information about our eligibility requirements, application procedures and who to contact at our American partner schools.

AYF Eligibility Requirements

Applicants for the Academic Year in Freiburg program must…

  • have achieved at least sophomore standing by the beginning of the program. Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors are welcome to participate in AYF.
  • be in good academic standing.
  • be a degree-seeking student at a U.S. college or university.
  • have completed a minimum of 4 semesters of college German or the equivalent, with a grade point average in German of at least 3.0 and a cumulative GPA of 2.5 by the beginning of the program.

All applicants – including students from AYF consortium schools – must also meet the eligibility criteria of their home institution. If home institution eligibility criteria are more stringent, they will supersede the AYF program eligibility criteria.

Application Procedures

Students from consortium universities – UW-Madison, University of Iowa, University of Michigan, and Michigan State University – apply through the study abroad office at their home institution which may have a different (earlier) deadline. Contact the appropriate study abroad office for information on their application deadline.

Non-consortium students apply through the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

After students submit their applications to the appropriate study abroad office, a committee of faculty members will review the applications and may conduct phone or personal interviews with each candidate.

Though processing at each school may differ, applicants are usually notified of their status within six weeks of the deadline.

For additional application information, please contact the appropriate study abroad office.
